Engaging the Gen Z Workforce in Manufacturing

July 31, 2018

61 million people in the U.S. make up Generation Z – the video streaming, Instagramming, digital natives born after 1997. According to consulting firm BridgeWorks, this generation is a connected, diverse, resilient, and pragmatic group placing value on stability, personalization, equality, and resourcefulness. They’ve grown up in the age of immediacy, on-demand entertainment, global communication, and citizen journalism, and it’s these conditions that influence how they live and how they view the world.

It’s evident that the future workforce is changing the future of work. “Growing up with ubiquitous connectivity, evolving mobile technology, and a growing gig economy, has altered how Gen Z views employment,” says Ryan Jenkins of 21mill.com in the recent Forbes article Gen Z In The Workforce: How To Recruit And Retain Youth Generations. Furthermore, Gen Z places great value on working from home, unlimited vacation time, and inspired workplaces and considers these used-to-be perks fundamental to the employee experience.

Naturally, many organizations have attracting and retaining youth talent top of mind. In particular, one industry experiencing a talent crisis is manufacturing. Younger generations simply aren’t considering careers in the field – a problematic reality with imminent baby boomer retirements. To fight through this dilemma, manufacturers are compelled to find a way to work smarter and develop strategies that will help to attract, engage, and retain the future workforce.

On Thursday, August 23rd at 2:00 p.m. EDT, industry experts John Frehse of Ankura and Kylene Zenk of Kronos will share 5 steps manufacturers can take to engage the Gen Z workforce. Register for the free, IndustryWeek-hosted, live webinar here. Topics will include understanding how to engage your multi-generational workforce, discovering new ideas for making your workforce “Gen-Z-ready,” and learning about the critical role technology plays in the employee experience.

I’m on the tail end of the millennial generation, and I am quite positive that we haven’t seen the end of our scrutiny. That being said, Gen Z is on the rise, and they are a force to be reckoned with. Change is upon is, and it’s certainly an exciting time to be an employee.
