5 Things You Should At Least Pretend To Know (About Work) Today

5 things work

With props to the original and always great 5 Things You Should At Least Pretend To Know Today, here’s my list with #6 thrown in as a freebie:

  1. On July 3, 2015, the San Francisco Retail Workers Bill of Rights becomes law in the city. Certain retailers will have to comply with the new work rules including “Advance Notice of Work Schedule” and “Penalties for Changing Schedules.” And yes, Kronos can help our retail customers comply.
  2. The California Labor Commissioner’s office has ruled that San Francisco Uber drivers are employees of the firm and NOT independent contractors. Depending on how this um, fares in the courts, the whole Uber-like “on-demand” business model could be at risk.
  3. This summer Goldman Sachs interns are limited to a workday of 17 paltry hours. The new rules are in place “to improve the overall work experience of our interns.”
  4. (Work) Joyce wrote this excellent piece in the Huffington Post: There’s a Reason They Call It Work – Ten Lessons from the Trenches. I learn something from her every day, and now you can too. She’s not just like a boss. She is a boss…
  5. Speaking of work, a study found that if you actually work while at work, productivity will ensue. Who knew?
  6. Here’s your freebie… With California cities running out of water and NASA producing data indicating the planet is rapidly being depleted of groundwater, discussions around the water cooler are hereby prohibited. See item 5 above.
