Is the (job) game passing you by?

Yesterday Boston Bruins Baby Boomer coach Claude Julien met with the media (with a hip new goatee) for the first time since it was announced he’d be retained by the team. Not everyone is thrilled. Some in the Boston sports media think the game has changed and Julien hasn’t, can’t, and it’s time for him to go. I disagree, but the teams performance beginning in October will determine Coach Julien’s longer-term employment status.

My question today, especially for older workers is:

Have you changed to stay relevant in the ever evolving world of work?

Bloomberg chart on needed job skillsDo you even know what job skills are important today? Check out this gorgeous data visualization from Bloomberg on Job Skills Companies Want But Can’t Get. It seems the ability to change is a critical job skill today. Jody Greenstone Miller, CEO of Business Talent Group believes it’s, “Agility. Being able to jump in. Someone who can go in, figure it out, and add value is going to be very valuable.” Obviously there are specific skills that are required to stay relevant like the 10 hottest IT skills for 2015, or specific skills required today in marketing and digital marketing.  Hey, even the people-centric HR profession is evolving to more of a people-analytics practice.  Overall I think Fortune magazine nails it with their 5 skills employers want that you won’t see in a job ad. I highly recommend the article to learn more about the key skills that boomers especially should have, and that the article says senior executives don’t:

  • Intellectual Curiosity
  • 360-Degree Thinking
  • Cultural Competence
  • Empathy
  • Adaptability

After you read those descriptions, and if the game hasn’t passed you by, Kronos has over 200 global job openings in all disciplines.
