It’s Employee Appreciation Day, and you’re doing it wrong.

March 6, 2015

The DundieIn a way similar to my disdain for the once a year “show ‘em how you really feel” Valentine’s Day, I think Employee Appreciation Day is stupid… if this is the only day you actually show appreciation to your employees. Today isn’t more special than any other day. In fact, today is also:

– Dentist’s Day
– Oreo Cookie Day
– National Frozen Food Day
– World Day of Prayer
– National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day

Author and consultant Bob Nelson created Employee Appreciation Day 20 years ago, and he says, “This should be a daily thing. Not every person every day, but every day a manager should do something for somebody to show appreciation.” “Dr. Bob,” notes employee recognition is especially true these days for Millennials, but man, picking on the kids again? Recognition for a job well done is a need most of us share and respond positively to. In fact, it wouldn’t hurt to tell the bosses bosses boss they’re doing a good job – if they are. Think about it. Who’s giving them an “atta boy” or “atta girl?”

So if today is the day you’re giving out your version of a dozen roses or the “Dundie Awards,” you’re doing it wrong.

Shouldn’t every day be Employee Appreciation Day?
