“Hi [First Name]” and other email marketing disasters

first nameYesterday I received a “Hi Liz” salutation atop an email reminder for a webinar today. I will be attending, but I’m undecided whether I’ll attend as my male or female persona. I think I know how the screw-up happened. It’s all about email marketing lists. I hate them, and I loathe the hundreds of emails I receive annually peddling them. In fact, here’s my out of office message to emailers outside of Kronos:

I’m out of the office. If you’re trying to sell me a mailing list, please remove / unsubscribe / leave out / opt-out me from yours. Thanks.

Hey, as this article says, sh… uh, stuff happens. One time we, (and when I write “we” I mean someone else) put together an email to our KnowledgePass users. Somewhere lost in translation, the email was instead sent to every contact in every organization that had a KnowledgePass subscription! So for some organizations with only a few KnowledgePass users, 10, 15, 20 or more people received an email! That’s a HUGE problem because if just one of them labels you as spam, you may not be able to reach those customers again…

Anyway, be careful with email lists, and social media, too!

    Thanks “Liz” 😉 The one I get the most is my last name used as my first name. I ignore the “Hi, Person” emails right away. I am happy to report that I haven’t been turned into Shawn, though!
