10 Ways Technology Makes You Stupid

August 6, 2014

txtwldrvOK, I’m only doing 20% of the work here since Rebecca Hiscott in the Huffington Post provided the first 8 Ways Technology Makes You Stupid. Scanning that list I can see I’m only susceptible to 1, 2, 3… Um, yeah, all of them. Here are my 2 adds, and one of them can get you or me killed, so pay attention:

9. We’re not interacting with each other – Well, we are, but not face to face. You see it everywhere. A couple walking together in silence, each one peering down into their phone. A family at a restaurant, each member engrossed in their digital crack pipe.
10. We’re using while driving – I’m guilty on this one, too, but I don’t text and drive. Still, trying to fire up Spotify to play Band of Horses is a distraction probably as bad as texting. cites 3,328 killed and over 420,000 people injured in distraction-affected crashes in 2012. I see them everywhere, and they’re all shapes and sizes. 20-somethings, moms, and professionals whose business just can’t wait. also posted this chilling statistic: “At any given daylight moment across America, approximately 660,000 drivers are using cell phones or manipulating electronic devices while driving.”

Some advocate legal bans on texting while driving, but studies reveal bans can’t stop our human indiscipline. Even better, police in the UK are now seizing cellphones after every accident to determine if the driver(s) was “using” at the time of the accident. Wow. Maybe the fear of having your cellphone TAKEN AWAY will give pause to the perilous practice. I’m hopeful that car/phone integration technologies like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will offer voice interaction so we can keep our eyes on the road. Until then, it’s up to you and me.

I’m asking my family and (Play)Joyce to keep me honest. Ask your loved ones to help you, too. You can’t text when you’re dead.

Just Don’t Do it.
