People Start Yelling About Obamacare Again

February 11, 2014

crossfire-yellingYesterday when the Obama Administration Treasury Department announced that employers with 50 to 99 workers will be given another year – until January 1, 2016 to offer health insurance per the Affordable Care Act, people started yelling at each other on TV. This is the second time the “employer mandate” has been delayed. It was originally scheduled to take effect on January 1st of this year. Also announced was that beginning in 2015, companies with 100 or more workers must offer health insurance to only 70% of their full-time workers, down from the 95% originally mandated by the law.

The administration positioned the additional changes as a way to give businesses more time to comply, but opponents of the law contend it’s just election year politics. Queue the yelling. I don’t do politics here, or anywhere on social media, so you’ll have to go elsewhere for that debate… However, Kronos does offer an apolitical ACA resource center to help our customers and other employers navigate the changes.

ACA ManagerIn a Washington Post article on the announcement, National Restaurant Association’s director of labor and workforce policy, Michelle Neblett, expressed relief that many of her small restaurant clientele now have more time to “figure this out,” and that the delay “gives them time to comply.” The Post reported that Ms. Neblett also noted that “many members do not yet have systems in place to keep track of worker hours.” I’m glad Ms. Neblett brought that up. Our Workforce Ready is a perfect-fit, SaaS solution for small businesses in all industries to keep track of their worker hours, and it even has an “ACA Manager™” built-in, so you can proactively manage ACA compliance across your entire workforce… Whenever that time comes.
