“What would you do with a brain if you had one?”

September 20, 2013

“With the thoughts you’d be thinkin’
You could be another Lincoln
If you only had a brain”
by Harold Arlen (music) and E.Y. Harburg (lyrics)

Hey, it’s Friday, and I want to enter the weekend with a post of hope and optimism. I love this title as asked by Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz.” The good news is that we all have a brain. The sad fact of the matter though, is the grey can go bad, and it’s a very complex kid to reform. Here are some examples just from my little world:

  • A friend of mine has early onset Alzheimer’s disease.
  • (Work)Joyce is working hard to eradicate it in support of her dad.
  • As a child, my son suffered brain damage from a condition called hyperhomocysturnia. He’s now almost 22, but Kyle cannot read this post. I retain hope that someday he will.

Prior to Kyle’s diagnosis in 2007, I’d been trolling the web for any advances in brain research that might help my son. Just think if the big head was a priority for big pharma like the little head is…

“Viagra increases bloodflow to the penis,
but what drug increases bloodflow to the brain?”
 Author Jarod Kintz

brain-initiativeI will never lose hope that science may someday help my son read this… Well, maybe read something he’d enjoy, like the Harry Potter series… That’s why I’m so excited about President Obama’s BRAIN initiative. The investment endeavors to “revolutionize our understanding of the human mind and uncover new ways to treat, prevent, and cure brain disorders like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.” The research bolsters my hope for Kyle, and hey, I could use a little help, too.

What’s all this got to do with work? Just this: Are you using your healthy brain to its potential? Are you pushing it? If not, why not? Think about it. You never know. You could be another Lincoln.

Happy Friday.
