“Wineing” about Service

July 15, 2013

20130715-095732.jpgYeah, it’s a vacation day in Napa Valley, but I’m so devoted to you, whoever you are, that I’m going to pour out a Monday morning post. Yesterday, (Play)Joyce and I drove out to wine country after a fun wedding weekend in Berkeley, CA. No, not ours. Anyway, after a wonderful brunch at Redd in Yountville, we tried to unleash our inner wine snob, but discovered both the Far Niente and Caymus vineyards offer tastings by appointment only. V. Sattui, a favorite for years, has grown so popular it’s nearly inaccessible on a weekend…

After driving a bit on CA29, we popped into a quaint little winery we’d never heard of, and sat at the tasting bar. “Ed” started us off with a Sauvignon Blanc. It was subtly fruity, and with a light effervescence I imagined floating up into a beautiful cloud. The reds were just OK, and the California olive oils just don’t compare to their flavorful cousins from the old countries… Still… The service we experienced with Ed was wonderful. He educated us on the products, and consulted with us on other vineyards and restaurants to try. We both really enjoyed the experience, and I wanted to reward the service. We walked out with a chilled bottle of the Sauv Blanc and a couple cool Govino plastic wine glasses to partake poolside.

Ed’s service sold product. Simple as that. Now it’s back to more market research while I’m on vacation. For you.
