Rock of Ageism

rolling-stones-oldI’m going to see the Rolling Stones tonight. Yeah, in spite of past boycotts, and the feeling that I’m cheating on my Boston Bruins (DVR is set…), I’m going to see the “boys” for the last time. Why? Well, I love the music, but at this point in my life, perhaps Paul Whitefield in the Los Angeles Times nailed it in his critical piece when he wrote, “…they are the faces of us aging boomers. They don’t want to leave the stage — and neither do we.”

We’ll see tonight if they’re still worthy of the stage and can still get the job done. It’s the same situation in the workplace for aging baby-boomers. Are they worthy of the $tage, and can they still get the job done? I’ve written about how boomers can stay relevant, and our Workforce Institute has explored the challenges of managing a milti-generational workforce, including the generational clash developing between millennials, anxious to headline, and boomers who refuse to get off the stage.
