Just Another Cyber Monday?

November 26, 2012

I’m writing this post on Sunday morning of Thanksgiving weekend while (Play)Joyce catches up on her Vanity Fair, so I can shop online from the office tomorrow. I’m kidding, of course. Instead I’ll be engaging in some epic productive work endeavor, I’m sure. Oh, wait. Day full of meetings… Never mind on the productivity thing.

Actually, I’m not sure tomorrow will be a huge online shopping day compared to past “Cyber Monday’s.” My inbox has been crammed with online deals since last Wednesday. Where am I going with this? Oh yeah. Amazon. I can get virtually any product there, and while I may be able to find better deals via or, my purchases will be made where I’ve had a flawless customer experience for the past decade or so. There’s a reason they’re the giant rain-forest of retail, and it’s the customer experience. In a 2010 interview with Charlie Rose, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos had this to say about the customer experience:

“The balance of power is shifting toward consumers and away from companies…the individual is empowered… The right way to respond to this if you are a company is to put the vast majority of your energy, attention and dollars into building a great product or service and put a smaller amount into shouting about it, marketing it. If I build a great product or service, my customers will tell each other.”

Yep. He’s talking about “net promoters,” people who will tell others about their great experiences. Hey, Amazon isn’t perfect. (Play)Joyce isn’t crazy about their UI. She thinks it’s cluttered, but she’s more of a brick ‘n mortar girl, anyway. She’ll be out stimulating the economy through local businesses in about 147 Massachusetts towns this year, but I do hope she knows she can get the best gift evah at

And besides, for me, the bandwidth is the same at home as work.
