The Times They Are A-Changin’ – Part 2

October 1, 2012

Since I’ve already used this Dylan song title once, today has to be a sequel, but it fits on a couple different levels. First, Oracle OpenWorld is this week, and it’s all about the cloud! A couple articles I’ve read note that founder and CEO, Larry Ellison “dismissed” the cloud as “complete gibberish” at the 2008 OpenWorld, but in fairness, I think the man was chastising the marketing hype around cloud, not the concept itself. Four years later, Oracle is now all about the cloud, including the introduction of their new 12c database. Guess what the “c” stands for… It all makes sense strategically, but it remains to be seen if the $37B giant can pivot from a largely on-premise model to the cloud. In the words of Rick Sherlund, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc., “Oracle has to reposition for the cloud.” So there.

In the second “times they are a-changin’” category, my OpenWorld research revealed Pearl Jam is headlining a customer appreciation show Wednesday night. I’m not so sure how I feel about this pivot. Maybe it’s their 1994 battle against Ticketmaster for allegedly monopolizing concert ticket distribution, but I’ve just never thought of the band as, well, “corporate.” Stunned, I emailed a friend who is the most fervent Pearl Jam fan I know… She was, uh… this:

“OMG – I am speechless. This is like when U2 did the iPod commercial.”

Oracle in the cloud… Pearl Jam at Oracle OpenWorld. That’s a lot of change. Now I just wish I could be there Wednesday to check out um, that cool cloud stuff first hand. Yeah, that.

“Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin’”
Bob Dylan
