Out of this world vacation!

August 16, 2012

The past couple significant vacations with my son have been well planned. For the 2,200 mile “South By Southwest” epic in 2009, we (and when I write “we,” I mean “me”) drove the Pacific Coast Highway from San Diego to San Francisco, experienced the vortexes of Sedona, and saw 3 National Parks, including Yosemite, Death Valley and Grand Canyon. They were all very hot and very dry, but we loved them.

This year, with my Dad speed-dating various healthcare facilities in Florida, I was hesitant to commit to a plan involving a plane, so when “vacation” began on Friday, I had to wing it, but not on a plane. That’s when my college education came in handy. Oh, not the education itself, but the relationships I made while living at 1000 E. Grant Road, aka, “the Ruggie House.” No, I don’t know why it was named that, I just responded to a “roommate wanted” ad in the Arizona Daily Wildcat. Anyway… “Jerry” was one of our roommates. When “Phil” and I would stumble in from extracurricular activities in the wee hours, Jerry would be awake building a PC on our ping-pong table. While that did interrupt our olympic table tennis training, who were we to argue with a Physics major visibly excited by a 2K memory card? When Jerry left the Ruggie House, he was headed for a job at “Los Alamos.” That’s the last I ever heard of Jerry… Or so I thought.

This week I was intrigued by the coverage of the NASA mission to Mars. Then I was really gas, gas, gassed when I saw NASA was using… Come on, you know what’s coming… That’s right. Cloud services from Amazon! Hey, it’s not Kronos in the cloud, but it did provide me yet another way to blog it…

Oh, so I called NASA to get the scoop, and they connected me (undoubtedly through the cloud) with some guy named “Jerry.” Jerry knew nothing about the cloud thing, but he did hook Kyle and me up with an unconventional vacation. There’s a serious shortage of restaurants, and only one rental “car,” but if you like hot and dry, you’ll love Mars.
