The internet that almost saved Mother’s Day!

May 14, 2012

Al Gore invented the internet, right? Oh, I guess he never claimed that. Hmmm… Anyway, yesterday before I knew that, I threw a “Happy Mother’s Day” shout out to Tipper Gore on Facebook. Hey, I thought she was the mother of the internet, and yesterday, I loved the internet. Even more than usual…

My plan was to deliver beautiful flowers and a pizza to my mom for Mother’s Day (No, I’m not cheap. She loves pizza.), but at 4:15 when I turned the key, the starter groaned, then the dashboard lit up like that scene from “War Games” that’s about 3 minutes too long. After tinkering with stuff under the hood that I know very little about, I used my “God of Thunder(bolt)” smartphone and searched “TSX won’t start flickering dashboard.” All internet chatter said dead battery. I went into the house and fired up the IPad to:

  • Find and order a battery at Advance Auto Parts (and save $20!)
  • Research the battery to make sure it was decent
  • Set up a AAA service call for a jump start

By 6:15, AAA jumped me, Advance Auto Parts installed my new charge, and my son Kyle and his happy Dad were off to get a bite. Sorry, Mom. I’ll deliver your flowers today.

It was all so easy…

  • Search for answers
  • Validate with peeps
  • Set up a service call

Our Kronos Global Support organization offers this same easy solution to problems.

  • Use Supersearch for answers
  • Use forums to connect with other Kronos users
  • Use eCase to set up a service call

Easy, and all thanks to Al… Uh, J.C.R. Licklider… It seems he had the vision:

“A network of such [computers], connected to one another by wide-band communication lines [which provided] the functions of present-day libraries together with anticipated advances in information storage and retrieval and [other] symbiotic functions.”

—J.C.R. Licklider (from Wikipedia)
