Do You Change Your Own Oil?
What does changing your own oil have to do with “technology service experiences?” Well, decisions to “do-it-yourself” or outsource everyday personal services can shine some light on IT project strategies. In our busy day-to-day lives, where do you want to focus your time, energy, and money?

I frequently discuss the benefits of outsourcing IT services with our customers. Aligning the business benefits of IT outsourcing with the benefits consumers receive from personal services can help illustrate the value provided with our Managed Services offerings.

I don’t change my own oil. The fewer times I open the hood the better I feel about my car. I just want to drive it. The same philosophy relates directly to IT initiatives. Organizations want to drive the software, not tune it up. Why focus on maintenance when experts can manage everything under the hood for you?

Do you shovel your own driveway?
I’m sure not everyone can relate, but for many who experienced a winter like us in the Northeast, this question had a mighty impact on your well being and your back this winter. This is a service I choose not to outsource for a few reasons: “The exercise will do me good,” and “It’s usually not that bad.” Well, this winter it was that bad. Every storm reminded me I didn’t have the proper equipment or resources to properly plan for these disruptive events. I got through it, but expended a lot of time and energy that would have been better focused elsewhere.

Do you make your own pizza?
I often make pizza with my 6 year old daughter. Open the Boboli, let her spoon on sauce, unevenly spread cheese around the dough, counter, and floor… Pop it in the oven and Woolah! A Pizza! OK, not really pizza… Here’s what’s really involved:

Pizza Dough: Makes enough dough for two 10-12 inch pizzas

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (105°F-115°F)
  • 1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) of active dry yeast (check the expiration date on the package)
  • 3 1/2 cups bread flour (can use all-purpose but bread flour will give you a crisper crust)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Pizza Ingredients

  • Olive oil
  • Cornmeal (to slide the pizza onto the pizza stone)
  • Tomato sauce plus your choice of Mozzarella or Parmesan cheese, shredded, Feta cheese, Mushrooms, thinly sliced, Bell peppers, stems and seeds removed, thinly sliced, Italian sausage, cooked ahead, Chopped fresh basil, Pesto, Pepperoni, thinly sliced, Onions, thinly sliced, Sliced ham

Special equipment needed

  • A pizza stone, highly recommended if you want your pizza dough to be crusty
  • A pizza wheel for cutting the pizza, not required, but easier to deal with than a knife

That’s a lot of complicated steps and work. If you have the time and expertise, I’m sure the experience is gratifying, but I prefer my pie delivered.
